Best Pokémon to Befriend First in Pokemon Pokopia

In Pokémon Pokopia, every Pokémon has a specialty — a unique ability that helps you gather materials, process resources, or unlock new areas. Choosing which Pokémon to befriend first can dramatically speed up your early game. Here's our tier list ranked by specialty usefulness.

S Tier — Befriend These ASAP

Chop Specialty — Scyther, Farfetch'd

Chop is the most important early specialty. You need wood for almost everything — furniture, houses, crafting stations. A Chop Pokémon turns trees into logs, small logs, and planks. Scyther is the best early Chop Pokémon due to its speed and availability in Withered Wasteland.

Crush Specialty — Geodude, Graveler

Crush breaks rocks into stone, ore, and minerals. Stone is required for many habitat items and construction. Geodude is available very early and Graveler is a direct upgrade.

Water Specialty — Squirtle, Poliwag

Water Pokémon create water features (ponds, streams) and water plants. Many habitats require water elements, and crops need regular watering. Essential from day one.

A Tier — High Priority

Grow Specialty — Bulbasaur, Oddish

Grow Pokémon plant and tend crops (wheat, tomatoes, beans) and accelerate plant growth. Critical for food production and many nature-themed habitats. Bulbasaur is one of the first Pokémon you can befriend.

Burn Specialty — Charmander, Vulpix

Burn Pokémon power the smelting furnace, turning ore into ingots and sand into glass. You'll need this specialty to process advanced materials. Charmander is available early in the game.

Build Specialty — Machop, Timburr

Build Pokémon construct houses and large structures faster. Once you start building houses for your Pokémon (which raises comfort level), this specialty becomes essential.

B Tier — Get When Needed

Gather Specialty — Rattata, Sentret

Gather Pokémon collect items from the ground automatically. Useful for passive resource farming, but not as impactful as processing specialties.

Fly Specialty — Dragonite, Pidgeot

Fly Pokémon unlock aerial exploration and can reach otherwise inaccessible areas. Important for progression but usually unlocked mid-game.

Teleport Specialty — Abra, Ralts

Teleport enables fast travel between areas. A quality-of-life specialty that saves time once you've unlocked multiple areas.

C Tier — Niche but Fun

DJ / Party / Hype Specialties

These social specialties boost mood and atmosphere on your island. Fun for island decoration and events but not critical for progression. DJ Rotom is a notable Unique Pokémon with the DJ specialty.

Paint / Illuminate Specialties

Cosmetic specialties for customizing your island's appearance. Paint changes item colors and Illuminate adds lighting effects. Nice to have but not essential.

Recommended Early Build Order

For the fastest progression, focus on befriending Pokémon in this order:

  1. Chop + Crush — Wood and stone are needed for everything. Build the first habitats that attract these.
  2. Water + Grow — Unlock farming and water features for nature habitats.
  3. Burn — Start processing advanced materials (glass, metal ingots).
  4. Build — Construct houses to raise comfort levels.
  5. Fly / Teleport — Unlock when you reach new areas for quality-of-life improvement.
